Manager Garry Mills, who had already guided the Minstermen to FA Trophy success earlier in the campaign, struggled to hide his emotions at full time, as York returned to League Two for the first time since relegation in 2004.
“We're a Football League club, how fantastic does that sound?” Mills told BBC Radio York. “We've worked hard, what a season. I'm holding back tears to be honest. This is for everybody here today and everybody who couldn't make it too.”
The Minstermen fell a goal behind just two minutes into the final, but fought back midway through the first half to overturn the deficit.
Mills believes the spirited response was a true reflection of what has been a tremendous season from start to finish for his side.
He continued: “To go a goal behind and keep doing what we do best, keep playing our passing game, the lads were so brave. We deserved this from day one this season we have been excellent.”
