Dulwich suffer play-off final heartache

Dulwich Hamlet missed out on promotion to the Ryman Premier Division for the second consecutive year losing 1-0 in Sunday’s play-off final against Bognor Regis Town.

Stuart Axten’s first half header was enough for the Rocks to reclaim their place in the seventh tier of English Football, leaving Gavin Rose’s Dulwich side pondering a 12th consecutive season in the Ryman Division One South.

Sanchez Ming spurned the Hamlet’s best chance, Craig Stoner saving his second half penalty as Dulwich searched in vain for an equaliser that would force extra time.

The attendance of 2011 was the highest of the season in all three divisions, but that will serve as little comfort to a Dulwich side tipped by many for promotion at the start of the campaign.

In the Ryman Division One North play-off final Enfield triumphed over Needham Market by the same 1-0 score line.

Walid Matata grabbed the only goal of the game to earn the Towners a first season in the Ryman Premier since their establishment in 2001.

Hornchurch and Lowestoft square off in the Ryman Premier Division play-off final today with the winner earning promotion to the Blue Square bet South.
