Since relegation from the Football League in 2004, York have been involved in two play-off campaigns, the first five years ago when they were knocked out in the semi-finals on aggregate by Morecambe.
Just two years ago the Minstermen lost out to Oxford in the play-off final at Wembley and Mills is determined to bring success to Bootham Crescent.
Speaking to BBC Radio York, Mills said: “We've earned the right to be playing Mansfield in this two-legged semi-final. We know the prize and we want it. We want to get to Wembley again. We want that opportunity to get this wonderful football club back in the Football League.”
The Yorkshire based club reached the final of the FA Trophy earlier in the campaign, edging out play-off rivals Luton Town.
York took a slender 1-0 lead to Kenilworth Road and held firm to secure their final spot, and Mills is looking to make home advantage count again in the play-off semi-final first leg and take a lead into Bank Holiday Monday’s second leg at Field Mill.
“We will try to take a lead to Mansfield next Monday, I think that’s important as we proved with Luton, if that’s 1-0 then great because a draw is all we will need when we go down there.”
Despite Mansfield’s recent six match winning run, Mills is adamant that form will bear little relevance heading into the play-offs.
He added: “Wrexham are second and Mansfield are third, recent form suggests that Mansfield would be the tougher opponent, but does all that go out the window? I think it possibly does.”
The race to join Fleetwood Town in the Football League begins this evening. Mills is confident that the Minstermen have got what it takes to reach Wembley for a second time this season and to go on and reclaim their league status.
